FMP WEEK 2

In the morning I continued my research in the library by photocopying books that interested me, and worked well with the topic. I felt quite free with choosing them so I have many sheets of paper that later on I will probably not use. I am making the folder with images that works and that don’t, maybe later I will make use of them.
Group meeting was really helpful. I showed my research and we decided that It is all about the contrast (even the title is contrast itself). At first I was thinking that my „losing the track” is something wrong, but then I thought that it’s quite hard to change that. Maybe easier will be make use of that. I am overthinking everything, which is not bad, but sometimes quite hard to explain. I organized my  research that I have collected by taking papers that are the most interesting and make sense together. The rest of the research I will have for later. Now it’s easier to continue. I’ve chosen the time as thing to start with. I have theoretic background as well as the artist who use the time as a main theme in their work. I will make deeper research about the most interesting pieces or artist. Inspired by them I want to take my own photos, draw, record. I will make „samples” and add it to research sketchbook. I had a meeting with Sarah, which I found really helpful. Now I am more calm with what I am doing, because I know that I am doing right. I researched deeply „time” by founding artist that are working with this theme. I started using different media in my sketchbook for example tracing paper, string, bag bins etc. I used continue line to represent the time in a symbolic way. I was painting to music, trying to represent my vision of the time.

CONCEPT BOARD:

According to my research, I have visited Josh Faught exhibition in Saatchi Gallery in London. I found it really inspiring in case of methods of working. He creates sculptures, textiles, collages, and paintings. Is the best known for using different techniques such as knitting, crochet, and weaving that I want to explore in my work. I borrowed the knitting machine from school and started making samples to experiment a bit. From knitting I moved to weaving to make more samples, using a variety of media. I found it more exciting because It’s much easier to weave different things such as bin bags, cables or paper rather than knit them.

During my research, I changed the theme a little bit. In my project proposal, I was writing about different realities, how we perceive the world, how different people may see the world in so many ways. When I started doing my library research I found many books. I worked out the research method which works for me the best. I am taking books that I found the most interesting, then choose from them these the most inspiring ones. I realized that realities, perception, illusions are the minor part of what I'm interested in. That was too vague to look at. The most interesting book was the one about the time.

I researched this theme deeply by looking at the artists that work with this theme. I also looked at how people see the time. I started painting, drawing how I perceive this weird word. I found many references to themes that I was interested in at the beginning, such as perception, dream, music, surrealism. These themes are connected naturally, but I think that time is my best starting point. I made a whole sketchbook of research using variety of media.

FMP WEEK 1

Really great about this week is that I found in the library( by the accident) lot of interesting books and albums. From some of them I just photocopied interesting pages, photos etc. I found really interesting book to have further view on the theme. It is book about imagination, thinking and perception. It is really broad. I found there informations about artists connected with concrete themes for example hallucinations or day-dream as well as philosophers, psychologist opinions to make the statement more reliable. I want to do general research just to find the starting point of my further research. I borrowed a knitting machine to make some samples. I also went on the exhibition to saachi gallery. I loved the work of Josh Faught. He inspired me to make knitted samples. I tried just to experiment different styles. It was an installation, he’s work is mainly the tapestry. I was continuing making samples, but I stopped because of the technical issues with the machine, I also ordered weaving machine to experiment a little bit with weaving. I want to make more samples using different media. I have done also samples using 3D pen, at the beginning it was quite hard, It didn’t look good, but during experimentation it was better. I am a little bit confused about with my research. It is definitely to vague, not specific and hard to classify. I started looking at to many things in one moment. I think I need weekend to think about it one more time and make it more clear.

Question: Can I have in my research sketchbook many things that I am trying, my experimental journey, or I need to prepare my research first, and then decide what to put into sketchbook more specific?
I will write my blog on every Monday, because it is easier to write after weekend while I am clearing my mind a little bit.

Blog will contain:

  • learner planner
  • expectations vs. reality (how It went)
  • answers for my questions
  • photos of what I have done (sketchbook, notes)
  • goals for next week

WEEK 23&24

This project is called autonomous substrates, during this week I want to use some ideas connected with my FMP. We have been digesting the brief and decide upon a silhouette or shape to expand upon, as well as working with my peers and discussing the brief and support each other with new ideas. I was really excited to see how to input computer language to form an output on an external device. We were also exploring shapes in 3D software. I was also experimenting with the 3D pen, which I found really interesting to work with. I prefer this method, rather than rhinoceros, which was irritating me (I am really bad in that kind of programmes), but It was good to try. I've done samples using the 3D pen, and then I transferred it into the design. I want to design a bracelet which might navigate person. To explain it more clearly I was thinking about people with health issues such as Alzheimer. I think that kind of fashion accessory might be helpful to keep safe for example an older person.

WEEK 22

During second week of the project textille designers were focused on creating garments, my friends from fashion promotion were thinking about photoshoot and final vision of the project. I created samples in chosen materials with logo of the brand.  I liked the team meetings, they were really helpful to understand what who is doing. I wasn't really happy from this 2 weeks working collaboratively. I think we could do everything much better, starting from planning, and to do lists. During this project I learned a lot about group work, now I know how to organise all the work.

WEEK 21

For this industry project researched all the given designers. The most interesting ones were Balenciaga and Craig Green. I applied to be a textile designer in both choices because I wanted to check if I am not maybe more textile designer, rather than a fashion designer. It was a really helpful experience. I learned that I am not a textile designer at all. I think our group has problems with discussing the ideas, each person has their own point of view, but at the beginning, we didn't have a cohesive concept, that will enable comfortable work for everyone. I found it sometimes stressful. I didn't like that as a textile designer I have no impact on the design. I created a concept board for textile. I wanted to use recycled materials, as well as paint and print on them.

WEEK 20

This week was continuation of three words. I am really enjoying the process of research as well as design development. I experimented with different media for example cement or lush bombs. I created samples of textilles to see what works or what doesn't, which was really fun, because I decided to paint and experiment with sewing. I was working on the stand a lot, manipulating with fabrics and taking photos of the process. I used my samples as an inspiration for creating the final textille, which I painted. One part of material is very colorful, I used pink, blue, green and yellow, the other part created by my friend. I wanted her to show her emotions on the textille.

I receive a feedback from Maria, which was really helpful with developing my ideas further. After short talk I started drawing from quite abstract shapes that I created on a stand something more concrete. I've done illustrations on a 'person' which was more visible, rather that looking at nonconcrete idea. Also I decided to create from my painted canvas a specific textile using digital printer. I want to use my garment as a part of clothing that will be an additional piece, wore on something simple so it that can be moved and used in many different ways. I created a pages that illustrates may research and design development. I decided to use only photos that I will take by myself, or from books. These portraits from my resaerch board I have take for my foundation portfolio. I decided to use them, because they beautifuly present my idea of reflection and emotions that are hidden inside us.

WEEK 19

This week we started our own project based on the 3 words that we have chosen. I decided to choose Man Ray, reflect and grotesque. I found this three words really inspiring. I admire work of Man Ray and his surrealistic aesthetics. I thought that the connection between that words might be interesting. During that week basically, I was focused on research. I experimented a lot with different media trying to find the best point what will connect my research. I started by visiting the galleries, such as Tate Britain where I visited the impressionist's exhibition. I haven't found there much for my project, but it was worth seeing. Then I moved to Tate Modern, where I went to Modigliani and Rachel Whiteread exhibitions. They were so good !!! I was inspired by the methods of Modigliani's painting and I decided to use it in my final outcome. Rachel Whiteread was really interesting because of the simplicity of the shapes in her sculptures. She is using industrial materials such as plaster, concrete, resing, rubber and metal. My favorite part of research day was definitely visiting Rosie Wyle exhibition in Serpentines Gallery. Her childish style of painting in connection with the adult mind, and the mature themes of her works is incredible.

WEEK 15

During this week we were focused on how working in the industry looks like. The project was really quick, so we were supposed to learn how to work under pressure. New thing for me was how to define and interpret a customer profile, it was really easy but good to know how it looks in the industry. I realized that working for that kind of brands, on one hand, is easier but from another, it's not really creative and sometimes boring. This week enabled me to understand that being only a designer without real impact on the vision of the brand annoys me.

WEEK 14

This week was the continuation of the Progressive Detail Project and the week of progression reviews. At the beginning of the course, I felt quite lost, because I wasn't sure how my sketchbook should look like. While attending the workshops and learning from my mistakes I understood what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it. On self-directed study days, I was mainly developing silhouettes from the previous week and visiting the shops with materials. Then I focused on connecting the sportswear trends and garments with the historical details. It was really interesting part of my work and I was surprised how many connections I found. We've done also few workshops about technical drawings, as well as using the tape to contouring the body on the mannequin to support sportswear. It was helpful because I used this workshops to develop my silhouettes further. While looking at WGSN I found a lot of new brands and names to support my research.
